The Moderate Democrat's Dilemma

Pity Creigh Deeds. His job is not an easy one. First he must convince Virginians that he is 'one of them.' Even though the Washington Post and Senator Mark Warner are big fans, he's got to project that "down home folksy voice" that says he remembers his Bath County Roots.

Then there's the question of how tightly to embrace that donkey on the National level? It's probably a good idea to "not support" the Cap and Trade Tax being pushed forward by Mark Warner and the National Organization.

Then there's the base. You've got to put in a dig about George Bush's "tax cuts for the rich" but move on before someone points out that those lower rates spur corporate growth. You've got to convince college girls that Bob McDonnell wants to reinstate the Middle Ages so they'll "rock the vote!" Still you have to deal with the fact that most Virginians find Bob McDonnell's moral values mirror their own.

Since you are effectively running against your national party AND the Republicans, who's on your team? Your guaranteed tax cut for "any business that hires a new employee" sounds good but how do you create a climate where the business actually needs more employees due to increased productivity?

You see Creigh, I have to justify the ENTIRE cost of the employee before I will hire him or her.

And bringing broadband to every cowpasture in Virginia will probably go to the lowest bidder -- someone from out of state.

Also, how clear should you be on tax policy? A lot of us believe that government needs to restrain itself, just as we have had to in this current economy, and those 'evil' tax cuts will eventually lead to more business activity and increased revenues. It is not a fluke that the states in the most fiscal trouble right now have the highest tax rates. But who should YOU listen to?

Finally, how much should you bash your opponent when it starts to sound like that's all you have to offer? It's starting to sound something like this:

Folksy Voice: "We already know that Bob McDonnell Beats His Dawg!, But did you Know: BOB McDONNELL BEATS HIS DAWG!!!, and by the way, he supports Bush's tax cuts for the rich, and Bob McDonnell Beats His Dawg..."

It's time to present your positve ideas.

If you bash a good man's reputation long enough, it becomes obvious that you're bashing a good man's reputation. All good men have their naysayers and it is all too easy to become known for your naysaying.

The ANNENBERG Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvaniais the organization behind the FactCheck.org website that is being referenced by voters and media personalities alike to help them form opinions on the “truthfulness” of the claims being made by political ads as well as statements made on the Campaign Trail.

Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D. is the Director of the ANNENBERG Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania which is the organization BEHIND the FactCheck.org “truthfulness” website.

Richmond, VA - Six thousand Richmond area residents have signed a petition protesting nationalized health care, but Warner, Webb and Cantor refuse to personally meet to acknowledge the petition despite multiple requests.

"I don't understand how an elected official can ignore that level of opposition," said Mechanicsville resident, Kevin Dumville. "When these petitions are laid down end-to-end, they stretch longer than a football field."

"The petition signatures represent genuine concern of taxpayers about government take-over of our health care system," said Sara James of Midlothian. We expect our elected representatives to at least feign interest in the will of the people, but when we requested meetings to personally deliver the petitions, we were rebuffed at every turn. These politicians have repeatedly demonstrated no interest in the opinions of thousands of voters in their districts. Warner, Webb and Cantor should be ashamed of themselves!"

Corky Mann of Henrico, a relative newcomer to the political process, expressed dismay about the lack of response by his representatives. "These politicians seem to forget that we hired them, and we expect them to be responsive and considerate of our opinions, not to mention the fact we expect, at a minimum, a reverence for the Constitution, which these health care bills clearly ignore."

The petition states: "We the People of Virginia demand that the Federal Government remain within its Constitutional boundaries on health care. We reject any of the following: Government-run health insurance; One-size government-dictated package of health benefits; New job-killing mandates on employers; Federal medical mandates that violate State Sovereignty; Requirement on individuals to buy medical insurance coverage; Federal institution that controls private health insurance; Government intrusion into our medical privacy; Taxpayer dollars for euthanasia, or life ending services; Medical coverage for illegal immigrants at taxpayer expense."

...Not Their Words

Newspapers from The Roanoke Times to The Virginian-Pilot to The Richmond Times-Dispatch to the Waynesboro News Virginian have lambasted Deeds for running an “overwhelmingly negative” campaign, airing “deceitful” television spots, promoting an “outright lie”, and for the fact that he has “put forward absolutely no concrete set of proposals on any of the critical issues in this race, not transportation, not education, not economic development ... not a one."

Over and over, the "folksy voice" tells you that "Bob Mcdonnell is going to raise your taxes." But look here: In an op-ed piece for The Washington Post Wednesday, Bob's opponent finally came clean with voters that his first act if elected will be to raise taxes on Virginians. You can't fault a guy for doing what you think is right! The Washington Post editorial page noted, “R. Creigh Deeds, the Democrat running for governor in Virginia, has now unequivocally committed himself to support higher taxes…,” The Washington Post (September 24, 2009).

How about using the "folksy voice" to let us know your vision for the Commonwealth. Here's a novel idea: Let's make this Governor's race about IDEAS. ht/Ed Gillespie

A Lie Lays Better in a Downhome, Folksy Sort of Voice

The News Virginian Offers This Perspective [click to read] on the latest set of... ummm... 'misrepresentations' in the Virginia Governor's race. On WNLR, the Christian radio station, the steady stream of ads characterizing Bob McDonnell as the 'tax and spend' candidate continues. This in spite of the fact that the substance of the ads has been gutted by responsible journalism. Actually, this is probably a nice waste of money since most of the station's listeners actually like the fact that McDonnell is a real social conservative and his true fiscal record indicates he would be a good choice for Governor.

Also they would be likely to remember the tendency of Democratic candidates as they rise closer to national level politics, to embrace the 'wisdom' of its left leaning leaders [1.]. They run in local races as Pro-life, but as soon as they hit the national stage they suddenly find themselves 'Pro-choice,' not wanting to suffer the fate of Pennsylvania's Governor Casey. Casey, you may remember, held to his Pro-life beliefs as Governor and was 'rewarded' for his integrity by being denied the opportunity to speak at the Democratic National Convention.

Remember that candidate Obama talked a good centrist message and when elected veered left almost as soon as the promise to be President to 'those who didn't vote for me too.' had left his lips. The 'Time' has Come

When professional journalists ignore important stories, such as the beliefs of 'Green Jobs Czar' Van Jones, someone has to step up to the plate. When major media outlets such as the Washington Post push 'their' man in the Virginia Governor's race, we think 'THYME's' time has come. Please enjoy the first issue.

A 'Blessing for the Czar'

Seeing some of the 'qualifications' of some of the President's men, one is tempted to claim that blessing for oneself. Consider Cass Sunstien, University of Chicago law professor and Obama Czar appointee. Sunstien is a big-time animal rights advocate. He believes animals should have the right to legal representation. Talk about clogging up the courts with frivolous lawsuits! My dog Lucy could keep him busy for a year. Sunstien believes hunting should be banned.

Now it shouldn't be surprising that Obama is giving a place at the table to the far left, but he 'promised' to reach out to the half of the country that didn't vote for him. Mr. President, what does fulfilling that promise actually LOOK like?

Virginia Governor's Race: 'Debate Thyself?'

You've got to hand it to Creigh Deeds for creativity. This is the first time I've EVER heard of a candidate wanting to debate HIMSELF! Considering statements that Deeds has already made that he 'won't/will' raise certain taxes, his debate with himself could actually be interesting. Also, his folksy commercials trying to brand Bob McDonnell as the 'tax and spend' candidate qualify as 'high grade Kabuki.' But read on. Phil Cox reports:

With six weeks to go until Election Day, a lot hangs in the balance. While we always expected this race to tighten in the final weeks, we didn’t expect Creigh Deeds would sink to such incredible lows.

Deeds is now running blatantly false, negative attack ads with “facts” that have even been debunked by the Washington Post. The Lynchburg News & Advance called his recent ad on electricity rates “an outright lie” and the Virginian-Pilot trained its sights on another, editorializing that, “Deeds has deliberately concocted disingenuous and deceitful ads because he thinks voters are too stupid to know better.”

Creigh Deeds also made a last minute demand to NOT appear on stage with Bob McDonnell at a community candidate forum tomorrow at Virginia Union University. He insisted he appear alone instead.

Six weeks is not much time, but unfortunately, it’s plenty of time for Deeds to continue to engage in tactics to mislead voters.

I Thought the 'Fairness' Doctrine Had Taken Effect...

This morning I was listening to WNLR, the Christian radio station in Churchville and what I heard made me think the 'Fairness' Doctrine had been passed during the night. Creigh Deeds was on the air with a spot trying to convince you that Bob McDonnell was the 'tax and spend' candidate. Kool-Aid anyone? The spot was followed by an explaination that the station was required to take all political advertising from all sides. I assume they run the explaination every time after the advertisement.

Fishersville Mike Has These Thoughts [click to read] about the desperation in the Deeds camp as polls show McDonnell holding a respectable lead. I guess an impassioned plea to the 'radical' 'threatening to what it means to most of us to be an American' 'religious right' [1.] has to be seen in that light.

'Pravda on the Potomac' tries to 'fix' Virginia's Governor's race. I'm sure they are digging into McDonnell's high school records as we speak. My only question is why only 'dangerous' conservatives need to be vetted so thoroughly. Michael Barone says:

"In the 2006 campaign season the Washington Post ran more than a dozen front-page stories on Senator George Allen’s reference, at an August 11 campaign stop almost 400 miles from Washington, to an opposition campaign staffer as “Macaca.” One of these stories, perhaps, had enough news value to be worthy of the front page; the others were placed there with the obvious intent of defeating Allen and electing his Democratic opponent Jim Webb, who did indeed win by a 50%-49% margin.

Now there’s a campaign on for governor of Virginia, and the news editors of the Post seem to be using their front page once again to defeat the Republican candidate, Bob McDonnell, and elect Democrat Creigh Deeds. To provide a fair perspective, we’ll start a Macaca watch, to list stories which make the front page of the Post not on the basis of news value but solely and obviously to defeat the Republican candidate."

I remember the rainy night well. I had to pick up a friend at Dulles so I was listening to returns for the Senate race in the cell phone waiting area parking lot. George Allen was winning most of the Virginia data that was reported early. Northern Virginia was the last area to have final results and it was clear that that is when the tide turned for Webb. After Macaca there would always be hecklers who would show up at Allen's appearances trying to create a scene [talk about 'astroturf' here]. It was a dismal evening as we headed home on 81. I was beginning to feel underrepresented.

The Washington Post has about as much business picking the Governor of Virginia as I do picking the Prime Minister of France!

David Karaffa Brought Both to the Campaign

SWAC Girl Has This Report [click to read] on the man who clearly stood on principle and brought substantial discussion of ideas to the table. The Man Who So Clearly Explained a Trillion [click to read] represents a trend I hope continues. There are so many young people who are becoming knowledgeable and articulate about the issues that affect us.

The fact that a young [25 years old] man electrified the room with substantial discussion should hearten us.

Here's the News Virginian Report [click to read] of the candidate's forum. They note that Karaffa addresses unfunded Federal mandates. Indeed, it is imperative for candidates at the state level to be well versed in matters Federal, since there is already a complex overlay of Federal involvement in matters the Tenth Amendment would have us believe belong to the states. Bob McDonnell is right to inject discussion of such issues into the governor's race.

21st Century Outrage

Reconstructing the America Tocqueville Observed

Earlier today I posted about some 'bad advice' being handed to Bob McDonnell by pundit Larry Sabato. When I saw this I realized there is indeed an America that has been cast aside by the political 'elite.' Sadly, it is the noble experiment that Tocqueville and so many others observed in our Nation's youth.

Here is a letter Glenn Beck received from a registered Democrat, 53 years old, and read on his show: ht/SWAC Girl:

I'm a home grown American citizen, 53, registered Democrat all my life. Before the last presidential election I registered as a Republican because I no longer felt the Democratic Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. Now I no longer feel the Republican Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. The fact is I no longer feel any political party or representative in Washington represents my views or works to pursue the issues important to me.

There must be someone. Please tell me who you are. Please stand up and tell me that you are there and that you're willing to fight for our Constitution as it was written. Please stand up now. You might ask yourself what my views and issues are that I would horribly feel so disenfranchised by both major political parties. What kind of nut job am I? Will you please tell me?

Well, these are briefly my views and issues for which I seek representation:

One, illegal immigration. I want you to stop coddling illegal immigrants and secure our borders. Close the underground tunnels. Stop the violence and the trafficking in drugs and people. No amnesty, not again. Been there, done that, no resolution. P.S., I'm not a racist. This isn't to be confused with legal immigration.

Two, the TARP bill, I want it repealed and I want no further funding supplied to it. We told you no, but you did it anyway. I want the remaining unfunded 95% repealed. Freeze, repeal.

Three: Czars, I want the circumvention of our checks and balances stopped immediately. Fire the czars. No more czars. Government officials answer to the process, not to the president. Stop trampling on our Constitution and honor it.

Four, cap and trade. The debate on global warming is not over. There is more to say.

Five, universal healthcare. I will not be rushed into another expensive decision. Don't you dare try to pass this in the middle of the night and then go on break. Slow down!

Six, growing government control. I want states rights and sovereignty fully restored. I want less government in my life, not more. Shrink it down. Mind your own business. You have enough to take care of with your real obligations. Why don't you start there.

Seven, ACORN. I do not want ACORN and its affiliates in charge of our 2010 census. I want them investigated. I also do not want mandatory escrow fees contributed to them every time on every real estate deal that closes. Stop the funding to ACORN and its affiliates pending impartial audits and investigations. I do not trust them with taking the census over with our taxpayer money. I don't trust them with our taxpayer money. Face up to the allegations against them and get it resolved before taxpayers get any more involved with them. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, hello. Stop protecting your political buddies. You work for us, the people. Investigate.

Eight, redistribution of wealth. No, no, no. I work for my money. It is mine. I have always worked for people with more money than I have because they gave me jobs. That is the only redistribution of wealth that I will support. I never got a job from a poor person. Why do you want me to hate my employers? Why ‑‑ what do you have against shareholders making a profit?

Nine, charitable contributions. Although I never got a job from a poor person, I have helped many in need. Charity belongs in our local communities, where we know our needs best and can use our local talent and our local resources. Butt out, please. We want to do it ourselves.

Ten, corporate bailouts. Knock it off. Sink or swim like the rest of us. If there are hard times ahead, we'll be better off just getting into it and letting the strong survive. Quick and painful. Have you ever ripped off a Band‑Aid? We will pull together. Great things happen in America under great hardship. Give us the chance to innovate. We cannot disappoint you more than you have disappointed us.

Eleven, transparency and accountability. How about it? No, really, how about it? Let's have it. Let's say we give the buzzwords a rest and have some straight honest talk. Please try ‑‑ please stop manipulating and trying to appease me with clever wording. I am not the idiot you obviously take me for. Stop sneaking around and meeting in back rooms making deals with your friends. It will only be a prelude to your criminal investigation. Stop hiding things from me.

Twelve, unprecedented quick spending. Stop it now.

Take a breath. Listen to the people. Let's just slow down and get some input from some nonpoliticians on the subject. Stop making everything an emergency. Stop speed reading our bills into law. I am not an activist. I am not a community organizer. Nor am I a terrorist, a militant or a violent person. I am a parent and a grandparent. I work. I'm busy. I'm busy. I am busy, and I am tired. I thought we elected competent people to take care of the business of government so that we could work, raise our families, pay our bills, have a little recreation, complain about taxes, endure our hardships, pursue our personal goals, cut our lawn, wash our cars on the weekends and be responsible contributing members of society and teach our children to be the same all while living in the home of the free and land of the brave.

I entrusted you with upholding the Constitution. I believed in the checks and balances to keep from getting far off course. What happened? You are very far off course. Do you really think I find humor in the hiring of a speed reader to unintelligently ramble all through a bill that you signed into law without knowing what it contained? I do not. It is a mockery of the responsibility I have entrusted to you. It is a slap in the face. I am not laughing at your arrogance. Why is it that I feel as if you would not trust me to make a single decision about my own life and how I would live it but you should expect that I should trust you with the debt that you have laid on all of us and our children. We did not want the TARP bill. We said no. We would repeal it if we could. I am sure that we still cannot. There is such urgency and recklessness in all of the recent spending.

From my perspective, it seems that all of you have gone insane. I also know that I am far from alone in these feelings. Do you honestly feel that your current pursuits have merit to patriotic Americans? We want it to stop. We want to put the brakes on everything that is being rushed by us and forced upon us. We want our voice back. You have forced us to put our lives on hold to straighten out the mess that you are making. We will have to give up our vacations, our time spent with our children, any relaxation time we may have had and money we cannot afford to spend on you to bring our concerns to Washington. Our president often knows all the right buzzword is unsustainable. Well, no kidding. How many tens of thousands of dollars did the focus group cost to come up with that word? We don't want your overpriced words. Stop treating us like we're morons.

We want all of you to stop focusing on your reelection and do the job we want done, not the job you want done or the job your party wants done. You work for us and at this rate I guarantee you not for long because we are coming. We will be heard and we will be represented. You think we're so busy with our lives that we will never come for you? We are the formerly silent majority, all of us who quietly work , pay taxes, obey the law, vote, save money, keep our noses to the grindstone and we are now looking up at you.

You have awakened us, the patriotic spirit so strong and so powerful that it had been sleeping too long. You have pushed us too far. Our numbers are great. They may surprise you. For every one of us who will be there, there will be hundreds more that could not come. Unlike you, we have their trust. We will represent them honestly, rest assured. They will be at the polls on voting day to usher you out of office. We have cancelled vacations. We will use our last few dollars saved. We will find the representation among us and a grassroots campaign will flourish. We didn't ask for this fight. But the gloves are coming off. We do not come in violence, but we are angry. You will represent us or you will be replaced with someone who will. There are candidates among us when he will rise like a Phoenix from the ashes that you have made of our constitution.

Democrat, Republican, independent, libertarian. Understand this. We don't care. Political parties are meaningless to us. Patriotic Americans are willing to do right by us and our Constitution and that is all that matters to us now. We are going to fire all of you who abuse power and seek more. It is not your power. It is ours and we want it back. We entrusted you with it and you abused it. You are dishonorable. You are dishonest. As Americans we are ashamed of you. You have brought shame to us. If you are not representing the wants and needs of your constituency loudly and consistently, in spite of the objections of your party, you will be fired. Did you hear? We no longer care about your political parties. You need to be loyal to us, not to them. Because we will get you fired and they will not save you. If you do or can represent me, my issues, my views, please stand up. Make your identity known. You need to make some noise about it. Speak up. I need to know who you are. If you do not speak up, you will be herded out with the rest of the sheep and we will replace the whole d--n congress if need be one by one. We are coming. Are we coming for you? Who do you represent? What do you represent? Listen. Because we are coming. We the people are coming.

"Meet Me in the Middle"

Larry Sabato's Bad Advice to Bob McDonnell

It's the "sucker punch" we ought to be looking for. A pundit says: "One of the underlying concerns that many thoughtful Virginians have about McDonnell are his ties to the 'Christian Right.' " -- Larry Sabato. The big implication is that if you are a 'thoughtful Virginian' you are not a member of the 'Christian Right.'

Not so fast... how many times have Conservatives been told to "move to the middle" by 'Moderates' and yet the evidence suggests this is no formula for success. John McCain should have been Colin Powell's ideal candidate but look at Powell's party loyalty in the last election.

It is a bit like making peace with Hamas. Give them everything they want and at the end of the day they just want your head on a platter. They do not like you, they do not love you. They are ideaologically committed to your defeat. May I humbly suggest a better way.

If you look at the American people, the number of those who identify themselves as 'Pro Life' are over 50%. The Tea Party Movement is strong, despite claims by the slipstream media that they are insignificant. Clearly there is a large segment of the population that feels disenfranchised in the current political landscape. Their values are not those of the Hollywood left, though they dread the prospect of an intrusive 'theocracy' that has largely been inflated by the left.

Moving to the midsdle is a strategy, moreover, that works for liberals. Their extreme environmental policies and government intrusion are not what America wants. They know it so they are experts at veering center for elections. They state that they believe marriage to be between a man and woman but write legislation to create favored status for some sexual practices. They tell the gay lobbies to be patient during the general election and then reward them by executive order in private.

This actually creates a situation where the bulk of the American population is not very well represented. Still, they are being told that the 'far right' is worse than the 'far left' in the great scheme of things. Here is where our opportunity lies. We have to dismiss this whole notion that 'the era of Reagan is over' and learn to communicate again.

I have only conversed with Bob McDonnell once briefly but I believe he has great ablility when it comes to articulating the values most Virginians hold dear. These values are more to the right than Mr. Sabato wants McDonnell to set his course, but I believe that the path to victory lies in striking a clear note that resonates with the good people of Virginia and not becoming a poor imitation of Creigh Deeds. One can do so by carefully avoiding 'rightspeak' and teaching our core values with a clear voice.

As a 'thoughtful Virginian' who cherishes the values of faith and virtue, I can wish for no less.

'Happy Ecosystem' right out of a Disney movie ending.

The 'inside the Beltway' guys were beaten by someone who's not from Northern Virginia. They were beaten by someone who actually believes the Second Amendment should exist.

Perhaps 'blue dogs' are not quite as endangered as the slipstream media want you to think they are. Perhaps a more conservative population really does feel underrepresented [as indeed they are right now].
