Steven Malanga in City Journal [click to read] shows how a closer analysis of 'Blue America' finds it very much an urban phenomenom, fueled in part by public sector unions [read SEIU here].

"Is it really true that America is politically divided between conservative “Red” states in the southern and middle sections of the country and liberal “Blue” states on both coasts? Not exactly: a close look at the district-by-district voting patterns of the coastal states in the 2004 elections brings into crystal-clear focus the real nature of our political divisions. There’s really no such thing as a Blue state—only Blue metropolitan regions. Indeed, the electoral maps of some states that went for John Kerry in 2004 consist mostly of Red suburban and rural counties surrounding deep Blue cities."

Virginia's 2006 and 2008 voting patterns, which are supposed to 'prove' that Virginia is 'purple' only reflect the continuing urbanization of Northern Virginia. Virginia is still very much a place that values well articulated Conservative values. A collected survey of the campaign rhetoric of both Democrats and Republicans shows that it is important to present yourself as a champion of fiscal responsibility and an affirmer of Conservative values. Jim Webb did not run as a progressive... he ran as a Reagan Conservative who "was better at it than George Allen." His voting record, especially on the monster healthcare bill, does not square with that claim.

Mark Warner, speaking to some of the urban elite during his Senate run said: "One of the things you are going to see is a coalition that is just about completely taken over the Republican Party in this state and if they have their way it’s going to take over state government. It is made up of the Christian Coalition, but not just them. It is made up of the right-to-lifers, but not just them. It’s made up of the NRA, but not just them. It is made up of the home-schoolers, but not just them. It’s made up of a whole coalition of people that have all sorts of differing views that I think most of us in this room would find threatening to what it means to be an American." [1.]

Clearly there is a need for the progressive candidate to pitch the blue urbanites in intimate settings while presenting himelf in public as the champion of the very gun-totin' Bible thumpin' people his true supporters find 'threatening.' It's hard to have to maintain two messages but the media seems all to eager to oblidge. [2.] When a friend of mine tried to explain Warner's comment in a letter to the editor, the newspaper declined to print it.

Most interesting is the spin that is being put out by the people who were just weeks ago ramming healthcare down our throats under cover of darkness... that this is just an extension of the dissatisfaction that put Mr. Obama in office!

Time to Remember Those Spineless Senators...


My next project is modelled after Joe Klein's Teddy award for courage... only it's for LACK of spine that this award is given.

Yes, it is time to remember those spineless public servants in the US Senate. The 2009 Demmys are open for nominations. There are some so obvious that I've already created the... er... award.

Others may come to mind so please nominate as many as you wish [limit60]. I want to publish before New Year's Eve. Write a brief reason whythe Senator is deserving... example: "Joe Lieberman, predictably unpredictable... look at his voting record and forget what he says."

I'll have some more from the 'official' Joe Lieberman criticizer, Binyamin Jolkovsky, but please go for the creative gold here.

First Up: Senator Jim Webb, D, VA

Jim Webb came into office as the "R2D2" of the 2006 U.S. Senate campaign, an indecisive candidate who had been a Republican, then a Democrat, back to a Republican, and finally a Democrat again ... who had not followed through in previously held offices ... who was "elected" by the Washington Post and liberal bloggers over a made-up controversy ... who said he would represent the citizens of Virginia.

When push came to shove over Obama's socialist policies, Webb caved and went along lock-step with his fellow Democrats. When Virginians wanted to meet with him during the summer of 2009 to discuss health care, he scurried away overseas for his summer break and never held a townhall meeting to hear their concerns.

When Virginians overwhelmingly voted Republican in November to oppose ObamaCare, Webb pretended it didn't happen. And when the Senate was called on to continue to jam its fist down the throats of the majority of American citizens opposed to socialized health care, Jim Webb didn't care. He voted for cloture, voted for cloture again, and then voted for nationalized health care on Christmas Eve 2009. For acting like a donkey's hindquarters, he definitely deserves a Demmy Award.

Second Up: Senator Joe Lieberman, D, CT

It's no secret that Joe Lieberman caved on health care. Michelle Malkin [1.] points out how Binyamin Jolkovsky of Jewish World Review has documented a track record of similar behavior: "When Connecticut senator and former Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman mischaracterized orthodox Jewish doctrine on the Don Imus show and later courted anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, Jolkovsky bluntly exposed Lieberman's sellout of his core religious beliefs in pursuit of higher public office."

He's not exactly the person I want to hear saying: "Got your back," if you know what I mean.

Senators Stealthily Support Socialism

At 1:00 a.m. today, literally in the dead of night, the United States Senate on a straight party line voted to move closer to the health care takeover.

60 Democrats voted YES and 40 Republicans voted NO.

In my 25 years in the political arena I thought I had seen it all for political pay-offs, crass deal cutting, and bare-knuckle threats. But, Majority Leader Reid, and sadly, even President Obama reached a new low. To avoid the blizzard of calls from their constituents, folks like you and me, most Democrat Senators actually turned off their phones as they prepared for the dead of night vote on Monday morning.

A couple of examples:

Senator Ben Nelson got an unprecedented deal to force federal taxpayers to pick up 100% of the cost of Nebraska's Medicaid expansion--forever.

Connecticut's Senator, Christopher Dodd, got a $100 million earmark for a hospital at the University of Connecticut.

Vermont Senators Pat Leahy and Bernie Sanders, who had been threatening to oppose the bill from the Left, got an extra $250 million in Medicaid funding.

In Florida, Senator Bill Nelson got three counties carved out of Medicare Advantage cuts that will happen everywhere else in the country.

Of course we know about the "Louisiana Purchase" where Reid and Obama paid $300 million of our taxpayer dollars to the pet projects of Senator Landrieu to secure her vote.

Yes, this is frustrating. Yes, we lost a round in the Senate and it was a tough one. But, we cannot give up the fight. And, we're not. After Senator Nelson's cave-in on Saturday, Americans for Prosperity sponsored a rally yesterday with one day's notice in Omaha, which Mike Huckabee flew out to headline. On the last Sunday afternoon before Christmas, the press reported that over 1,800 fired-up grassroots activists showed up to tell Senator Nelson what they thought of his sellout! In Virginia, where Senator Jim Webb was a key swing vote, we held a state tele-town hall call with Congressman Frank Wolf on Saturday and over 10,000 people joined the call with a full 5,000 of those folks staying on for extended periods of time. We asked people to go to TellWebbNO.com and send an email or make a call to Senator Webb and thousands did just that. He was the last Democrat to publicly announce his support for the bill, around 9:00 p.m. last night, and we will hold him accountable for caving.

Here are the next steps on the Congressional front. The second big vote to end debate on the health care takeover bill will occur around 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

If Reid and Obama hold all 60 of their votes, then there will be one more cloture vote (to end debate) Wednesday evening and a final vote on passage of the bill sometime on Thursday.

After that, the House and Senate would have to hold a conference to work through the considerable differences in the House and Senate versions of the legislation.

Then, the health care takeover would have to pass both chambers again. That final battle would most likely take place in early January. It's the Holiday Season. And we've been in a long hard fight. You've done so much. Sacrificed a lot. But, I'm asking you to do two last things before these final Senate votes.

1. CLICK HERE TO Contact your Senators one more time to tell them you are fully aware of all the pork-barrel earmarks, vote buying and political corruption in this health care bill. And, that you want them to reject this kind of politics and vote NO. If your Senators are Republicans, THANK THEM for voting against this bill this morning.

2. Take a moment to email your friends/family list. YOU CAN USE THIS LINK to ask them to take action by contacting their Senators today. If we can show a frenzy of activity now -- just a few days before Christmas -- that will send a powerful message.

We're winning with the American public. Every poll shows that. This political class in Washington knows that and so they are desperately trying to get this thing done now using the Holiday Season and the dark of night as cover. Let's not let them get away with it.

Now is the Time to Make a Difference!


The fate of our Nation hangs in the balance. It is time to make our voices heard!

The Senate health care vote is resting on Blue Dog Democrats.

Guess what? We have two of them in our Commonwealth! The Richmond Tea Party received the following email from Senator Warner yesterday:

"I will continue to work to strengthen and improve this legislation, because I believe the cost of inaction is unacceptable. If we do nothing to fix our system, our current health care system will bankrupt our nation. Already, health care spending represents one-sixth of our total economy, and that is projected to grow to one-third by 2040." [excerpt]

Does that sound like someone prepared to vote against the socialized health care bill? You know what Warner is really saying, right? This will simply transfer one-third of our economy by 2040 to the Federal government. Is that what you want? This will be the single greatest grab of our liberty since the New Deal.

Senator Webb is also considered a vote that is still undecided. As Virginians, we have an obligation to tea party patriots across our country to influence and sway these supposed Blue Dogs in our own state. Over 56% of Virginians oppose Obamacare. Warner and Webb need to hear from us.

Let's do our part! This bill will fundamentally change the course of our country. We know you have called, emailed, and protested these last few months, but it is a small price to pay for our freedom. We will take action at the state level to thwart this government expansion, but we must also continue the fight with Congress.

Senators Webb and Warner were 'absent' this year when citizens demanded town hall meetings.

They ignored us during the healthcare debate. They voted "absent" when they allowed the monstrosity onto the Senate floor for debate but they're finally coming to Staunton. The Stonewall Jackson Conference Center in downtown Staunton will host the Democratic Party of Virginia Central Committee meeting Saturday, Dec. 5, including Gov. Tim Kaine and Sens. Mark Warner and Jim Webb.

If you really cared about the legitimate concerns so many of us have about it then why did both of you vote to allow this destructive monstrosity to go to debate in the first place?

H.R. 3962 Disgronified...

2000 Pages of Impending Economic Disaster...

We ran all 2000+ pages of H.R. 3962 through the Disgronifier [click for details] and this is just part of what the Disgronifier output contained:

The CBO estimates that H.R. 3962, the health bill that the House passed, would cost $1.2 TRILLION over 10 years, including the cost to states for mandated Medicaid expansion ($34 billion), the "Doc Fix" ($245 billion), and authorized discretionary spending for grants, public programs, changes and funding for a variety of agencies that would be responsible for implementing H.R. 3962.

The bill protects trial lawyers. The bill gives money (authorized at "such sums") to states that enact "certificate of merit" (a document signed by a medical professional that says there is a probability that the standard of care was violated) and / or a certificate of "early offer" (an early, confidential apology) laws, as long as the states don't limit attorneys' fees or impose caps on damages.

The current version will give billions of dollars of taxpayer healthcare benefits to ILLEGAL ALIENS in America. It would allow illegal aliens to use the new healthcare "exchange" and would not require verification to keep illegal aliens out of the other parts of the proposed federal healthcare system. Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus fought back against reports that leaders would add Senate language to block illegal immigrants from participating in the insurance exchange.

It will create a nationwide federal government program, the "public option," which will pay for abortion on demand -- with federal funds, of course, because that is what federal agencies spend.

Of course, now is the time to call, fax and email your Senators!

Sources on K Street and on Capitol Hill have confirmed that:--Senate staffers from the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate HELP (Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee) are in the process of writing the health care bill RIGHT NOW that the Senate will consider the second full week of October; and --Senator Reid plans to use all the procedural tactics in his toolbox to shut down debate and control the Amendment process to get this Senate debate completed by the end of October. They can add the Public Option as an amendment on the Senate floor with a simple majority if they have the will. This comes on the heels of defeat of a bill requiring a 72 hour "waiting period" allowing representatives to read legislation before voting on it.

We've said it before and it bears repeating. Elections Have Consequences. But who are these people we thought we were electing? Have their bodies been invaded by aliens with their own agenda? Our Senators at least pretended to listen to us, once long ago, during the campaign season. Instead, we are supposed to be assured when they listen carefully to Myanmar.
Something very ugly is about to come down; something so wicked nobody wants us to see it. The Zombies are awakening in the Chamber and we need to act now. Their Leader (who hails from Nevada, near Area 51) is putting the final touches on Frankenstein.

Please, call, email or fax your Senators TODAYand demand they put an end to this Chamber of Horrors. The Will of the People should not be subverted through tricky procedural maneuvers by creatures pretending to be our elected representatives. Leading the Leftward Drift...

...Today's 'Missing Senators' are a Kennedy Legacy

"As Kennedy tilted left, the Democratic Party generally followed."

Daniel J. Flynn in City Journal [click to read] offers a bit of perspective on how the Democratic Party drifted from a position of representing the people to representing the interests of a coalition of leftist interest groups. One leader of the journey leftward was Senator Kennedy.

"Massachusetts steadily drifted left. Where Massachusetts went, its longest-serving senator followed—and where Ted Kennedy went, the Democratic Party followed. Democrats lined up behind Kennedy because they believed in the Church of Camelot, because Kennedy embraced the FDR–LBJ activist-government model that had served the party well during its heyday, and because they had the tendency to mistake the most liberal voice in the room for the smartest voice in the room. The story of Democratic Party presidential politics between 1968 and 1984 reads something like Waiting for Godot, with the youngest Kennedy brother playing the title character."

But to look at brother John's legacy, turning back Soviet ships carrying missles to Cuba, cutting tax rates to spur the economy, one would have to conclude that JFK's legacy is far closer to Reagan's than the policies of Camelot today. Ted started out believing that unborn life was worthy of protection. When he occupied the National stage, however, he became a strong advocate of abortion 'rights.' At a time when many in his church were holding prayer vigils outside abortion clinics, the youngest Kennedy was overwriting the rights of the unborn with 'privacy.' Thus, he ceased to represent a great number of Catholics who hold to the sanctity of unborn life.

Gradually Camelot became less and less representative of the majority of Americans but continued to exist out of the myth that it did.

Response from Jim Webb on Healtcare Bill:

Dear Mr. Kirchman:

To follow-up on your earlier correspondence regarding health care reform, I wanted to update you on where this issue stands.

As you may know, Congress has adjourned for the month of August without enacting health care reform. During the coming weeks, I will be carefully examining the reform proposals currently on the table. The fact that the legislation is now on hold will give Congress the opportunity to study these proposals carefully and to hear from interested citizens. It is important for us to be very deliberate on an issue of such importance to the lives of our people.

I have stated on several occasions my concerns that the Obama administration should have begun the process with a clear proposal that could have been the starting point for the work of the five separate congressional committees charged with responsibility for this issue. Without such a specific format, Congress has had difficulty crafting a bill of such challenging scope and complexity. I am hopeful that the President will remedy this problem in the coming weeks.

Currently in the Senate, two committees have jurisdiction over health care – the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee and the Finance Committee. The HELP Committee has completed work on a health reform bill, the Affordable Health Choices Act. This bill aspires to significant reforms in the health insurance market, including provisions to prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. In the Finance Committee, negotiations continue on a reform package that might win support from both Democratic and Republican members of the Senate. The success of these ongoing negotiations will be critical in determining whether a bill can be achieved this year.

While most people are understandably satisfied with their health care, the system is not working for millions of American families. Spiraling costs for health care have placed our biggest industries at a severe competitive disadvantage, as employers struggle to provide insurance for their workers. By the same token, families are increasingly unable to depend on their health plans when they need them the most. This has contributed to the mortgage foreclosure crisis and the rise in personal bankruptcies. In short, our nation’s continued economic recovery would be advanced by meaningful health care reform, although such reform must emphatically be reasonable in scope, cost, and impact.
